Embarrassment: Let It Teach You Something

by BluePop13 on March 5, 2010

A lot of times we don’t want to do something because it’s embarrassing and we don’t want to be known as the person who did that. I say why not? At least you were willing to do something stupid enough to get attention which leads to all sorts of opportunities.

Let me explain.

A Crowd

In order to be embarrassed you really have to have others watching what you do and know you messed up big time or even just a little bit. It’s hard to not be embarrassed with no one there to watch you mess things up. This isn’t bad of course. You went for it and now you’ve been able to take the challenge by the horns and see what comes about. So what if things happened the way they did. People will be there and you can surely use those people to help you for next time by far.

Experience

When having done something like this you will gain much experience from it. You’ll learn what you can do better next time and with the crowd of people who were there you could even ask them what they would have done. This is great because it shows them that you’re willing to learn from your mistakes and ask for help as well as help others through your own experience.

Learning

You can always learn. It’s sad that most just do not. But you always can if you decide to. Just take notes and figure out how you could do it better for next time. It doesn’t have to be perfect and probably never will. But it’s not going to get you anywhere unless you learn from your mistakes and are able to keep going and helping others.

Help Another

By doing all this and getting far enough to help someone out you’re doing a great service to yourself and to others. Yes you’re helping someone else out in a tough time they’re having and maybe they’re embarrassed asking you for help. Great! You can offer your assistance. This shows you’re willing to be there and they may even recommend you as you might have recommended someone when you were in this spot. So help out and be helped.

Success

I will admit that success is different for a lot of people. However, success is still a simple thing and it just comes down to reaching a goal and realizing it was able to be accomplished. I don’t think success has much to do with money personally… But money does help.

Get a bit embarrassed, embrace the crowd, earn the experience, learn from your mistakes, help other people and finally reach what most may not ever, called success.

What is your success and how do you achieve it? What has being embarrassed just a bit taught you?

Embarassment/humiliation.. whew, nothing else makes you learn as quickly! Nothing like feeling heat coming off your face and head, lol. You’re right though, some of us beat ourselves too much, but why not learn and take away from the situation?

Moon,

Exactly. Learn from it and take some away that’s better than what we came with in the first place.

Interesting post. I am confused on the embarrassing yourself part. You mean doing something intentionally embarrassing right? If so, I believe more in getting out of your comfort zone. I think that doing so might be embarrassing, but like you said it is definitely valuable.

Alex,

Well, kinda. Doing something that is intentionally embarrassing yes but also no. It depends on the situation I believe. You do learn a lot from these kinds of experiences yes.

Thanks for the comment! :)

I am not very fearsome to try anything embarrassing but you sure do learn. Most important thing will to never repeat your mistakes.

Hey Agent,

That’s what it’s all about… Allowing yourself to learn in order to not repeat mistakes.

Thanks! :)

Eric I understand what you mean. I think that if you want to do something because your heart tells you it’s the right thing to do, then there’s nothing wrong with that.

I think if more people put their potential embarrasment aside and look at the reasons for doing it. If they have true intentions, then there should be no embarrasment.

Matt,

Exactly. Look at the big picture of what the outcome will be and just go for it. If you get embarrassed then it happens. If you make a mistake then learn and keep going.

What’s right is rarely ever easy and that’s what I also feel is important to keep in mind as you go through life.

Thanks! :)

I agree with Matthew. If you are so concerned with embarassment, then you won’t even leave your house! You have to put aside those feelings and just do what you feel is right and best for you.

I heard one time that Oprah doesn’t get embarassed because of all of the people on the planet, do you really think someone hasn’t had the exact same embarassing experience as you? It puts things into perspective knowing that we all have been embarassed at one point or another in our lives.

Karen,

That’s a good point you made about the fact that we have all been there at one point of our lives. We have and so why should we really let it get to us all that much. It’s basically a form of allowing yourself to learn through it and that’s what I wanted to bring across in my message.

It does happen to all of us! But how to manage it and how to come out of the embarrassment is a difficult task but with proper skills you can manage it pretty well. I think I have somehow learnt this art…Anyway, I sincerely thin that success will come when you learn from your mistakes..

Rohit,

Learning from your mistakes it what it’s all about and something we all need to learn how to do wisely. If we can do that and are able to move on, many great opportunities await us.

I am always afraid of making a fool of myself, doing things wrong. In fact, I’d go as far as to say I worry about this more than most people to. As a result I have to work really hard to make sure I don’t let it hold me back, and keep moving forward regardless. And, from experience, I can definitely say that I have learnt a lot of great things from it!

So many things can teach us all in so many ways. Embarrassment being one of those things. Great to hear from you.
