If You Want Success Then You Need A Goal

by BluePop13 on March 3, 2010

We are all successful and yet we want to be successful. Why is that you think? It’s because we see what’s possible from others results and we want what they have. Is it because we want to be like them or is it because they actually have managed to get what it is we really are after?

You decide.

Any Idea

My car has been sitting out in the frozen snow all winter. It literally hasn’t moved and I’ve cared less. We didn’t have insurance on it and basically used it as a storage for whatever we didn’t need at the time. Well, I finally wanted it out and I was going to get it out. Period.

With your life you need to have something similar. It can be just about anything and come from just about anywhere. You need to have an idea that is strong enough that you’re going to make it reality no matter what. An idea is better than no idea, honest.

Willingness

I was willing to do just about anything to get my car out of the snow. In fact, the only regret (now that I think about it) that I have as I’m writing this post is that I didn’t take pictures of it in the snow and how it was stuck. I can take pictures of it now but that’s not going to do much good lol.

You have to find something that you’re willing to do anything to make happen. Want to be rich? What are you willing to do to be rich? What ways can you come up with (hopefully legal) that will get you rich. Want to be in good health? What foods can you eat and what exercise can you do on a daily basis that will keep you in good shape and in good health. I personally enjoy taking walks sometimes and listening to music on my mp3 player. I encourage you to at least do this a few times a week. A few meaning around three in case you didn’t know.

The Reason Why

The reason I wanted my car out is because we are moving soon and I didn’t want to just get the car out right before we moved. I wanted to get it back out and on the road so I could drive it again and listen to my kick ass stereo system. I have a custom radio with an amp and a ten inch subwoofer in the trunk. It’s awesome and I love it, I’m not going to lie about that. I also wanted to make sure I had enough time to find out what might be wrong with the car so I could decide if I wanted to get a new one or fix this one up.

Have a good reason why you’re doing whatever it is you’re doing. If you’re not doing it for you and to improve your life then it’s just going to get tiresome and mean nothing later on. You have to make sure it’s the right thing for you and your family and it’s going to benefit you. Make sure you really want it.

A big thing here is that if you have a strong enough why then you will go for it no matter what it takes. And where there is a will there is a way. That’s a quote from someone as I first heard it from my grandmother before she passed away and if I knew who said it first (unless it was her, honestly doubt it though) I would be more than happy to give that person credit.

See It, Dream It

I saw myself driving my car and cranking up my stereo and just jamming out as I was going down the road. The feeling was overwhelming and I wanted it more than I wanted air! I dreamed of it every night and just knew I would have it soon. I had to have it. I needed it. I would do anything to get it!

You need to at least create something GREAT in your head and maybe even put it on paper. See it and then dream about it. You will know how strong of an emotion it is and you will understand how great an idea it is when the dreams start coming and you can see it and just have to have it no matter what it takes. This is a good sign of things to come for you.

Go For It

I changed this to what it is instead of take action. Everyone talks about taking action as do I. I’m sick of that. Well, not entirely but go for it is a good change just for now.

I went for it! I was out there shoveling and beating the ice around the car and kicking and cussing and just tearing up the snow. I bought ice melt and started the car up and got a new batter for it and just did everything everyone mentioned that just might help me out. Why not? After all, anything was better than nothing.

You have to just go for it. You may look stupid or get scared or worried or something but who cares? No one is good at everything and everyone has their special abilities in life. You’ll learn as you go but if you don’t go you’ll never learn. So go for it damnit and make something of yourself. You’ll have time to improve later but right now at least get your ass out there and do something about life… And remember, have fun!

Change It Up, Get Results

As I just said I tried many different ways of trying to get my car unstuck. I was getting so upset about it just barely being able to get out of its spot. I was not about to give up. I kept saying that it’s coming out TODAY! Period. Not tomorrow, today! Well, it actually get out on the 28th of February 2010 but I was so determined that it really didn’t matter. Saying to myself it’s coming out today no if, ands or butts about it made damn sure I wasn’t going to take a break or anything.

On the results end of things I finally tried everything all at once, ice melt, cardboard, shoveling, letting the car run a bit, and more. Everything was going well and I was seeing even better results than before.

Instead of beating a dead horse and not moving on from what you’re doing just change things up a bit. After all, and I know this is a quote but I’m not sure who from exactly: Doing the same thing and expecting different results is the definition of insanity. This is true. If you want different results and you’re just sure you’re doing everything right, do more, try something different, talk to people and see what they would do, maybe have them help you. Anything to get you closer to where you want to be. It WILL work. I promise.

Achievement

Ah… Finally… The car got out! YES! It took all of the mentioned above and three guys pushing and rocking that car. Either way success is mine! My car was finally out of where it had been sitting and I was so happy I almost cried. Seriously. Laugh if you will but when you’re as dead set on something like that and for two days straight it is just about there but not quite and finally, finally, finally it gets done, if YOU aren’t crying for joy then you must be doing something else for joy because you have it either way.

Once you have achievemnt it will help you to look back for the next time you are working hard at accomplishing something spectacular. Never give up and maybe change your stuff to get different and better results because achievement will come eventually. And boy is it worth it!

So, what all have you done about what you want out of your life and what did you do to get it? What was it and how did you feel when it became reality, finally?

Agree with you – a goal and a plan to reach that goal makes success a lot easier to imagine/achieve than a vague idea of what someone wants (I want to be rich instead of I plan to make $100,000 a year from affiliate marketing for example).

Glad to hear you eventually got the car out. :)

Hey Jason,

Yeah having a realistic view on things and creating a goal to shoot for is much more sensible than just saying you want to be rich or have success. Because it is someone else’s success you want or is it your own?

Yeah I’m happy too. I’ve been really enjoying cranking up the tunes in my car and just driving around… Just like old times! Love it! :)

Thanks! :)

That’s one way to put it ;) As I get older, I realize that I’ve changed, people in general change, their goals change. My goal 2-3 years ago was to afford my own apartment, get my own job, pay all bills myself, and to show everyone I can do it. I did it and now I want more out if than just that.

I want to live life on my own terms and try to take at least one action a day to help me get closer to my goals.

Good post!

Moon,

That sounds good! You’ve shown yourself you have accomplished living on your own and doing things the way for a while and now you’re going after more. That’s the way it should always be. Strive to do better and be better at everything you can and make sure you’re at least doing something each day to bring you closer to that goal.

Great to hear! Keep going and let me know how things turn out.

Thanks for sharing! :)

Hi Eric,

After you left that comment on my blog about my walk in the snow post, I was SO intrigued to hear more about your “digging the car out” experience. NOW I really get it!

You were so determined to get your car out that you didn’t allow yourself that failure was an option. I think this is a critical mindset in trying to achieve something. We might end up failing – or indeed achieving something different to what we set out to achieve – but we need to allow ourselves to deal with that eventuality if it happens then and not distract ourselves with the fear and possibility of failure now.

Thanks for sharing your learnings!

Hey Christine,

Great to see you here… I was looking forward to you stopping by and wondered what you’d have to say about my car experience.

I certainly was determined to get it out and didn’t give myself any quitting options, you’re right. I personally feel that if you mess up you still didn’t fail, as long as you never give up. AND, giving up and moving onto something else more worth it are two entirely different things, too.

Thanks so much for stopping by! :)

I especially liked this sentence: “If you’re not doing it for you and to improve your life then it’s just going to get tiresome and mean nothing later on.”

I find that I spent too long trying to do what I thought I should, but now I realise I need to do what’s right for ME and not necessarily everyone else. Everyone has different needs and different strengths, and if you choose your goals based on them you’re so much more likely to succeed.

Ruth,

I’m glad you like what I said there because I believe that’s so true.

I agree. Do what’s best for you because only you can.

Thanks! :)

I’m glad after all the pushing we did last weekend that you finally got your car out of the ice. I think mother nature was pretty determind to keep you in her ice clutches. If you hadn’t set your mind to the task at hand I believe your car would still be in its cozy spot. A real goal can never be lost nor forgotten as long as your mind is set to it.

In school they make us set these short term goals for the week. Everytime I sit down and have to make one up I think to myself… well graduate. No no.. thats too long I’ve already tried and tey get upset. So I say pass my classes, well that only worked once now it needs to be new. I’m about ready to print this off and tell my advisor, “Fuck! I am not a short goal person. I plan on graduating, going to college and getting an apartment with my homies. What fucking more do you need to know? I don’t go short term goals because my heart isn’t in them.” Without heart in the goal your just fiddling away your time like a broken record.

Sorry went on a bit of ramble there.

Hey Dex,

Thanks so much once again for your and Jimmy’s help. I’m sure you both had something to do with getting it unstuck.

It was sure stuck in there but my mind was stuck on getting it unstuck! lol

Some people have different kinds of goals so not everyone can be the same way. Personally, I don’t have many goals or have any written down. I had a goal to get my car out and I got it out. I have goals here and there and go for them and then when I want something bad enough I go after it. That’s just how I am so I can understand where you’re coming from.

Thanks for sharing! :)

Hi Eric,

I enjoyed reading the story and am glad that you finally got the car out :-)

What I take from this is to consider all of life’s little struggles as a learning opportunity. I know that when I have struggled with someone and *have not given up* gives me such a confidence boost that I know that I can refer back to those situations in the future. If I’ve overcame something before, I can bring that confidence to the next difficult task.

It all goes into the pot of life experience. Knowing that you have the strength, resources and intellect to figure things out is worth the struggle.

Hey Karen,

It definitely is worth the struggle and I believe that after you’ve accomplished a task, looking back on that task helps greatly for the next time around.

Excellent post bud. My most recent achievement which was a failure at the same time was quitting smoking. Out of 8 years of smoking I went the longest I ever have without any nicotine helpers or ‘cutting back’ which was about a week. I got so excited that I quit smoking I lost interest in continuing it and ended up slipping. Needless to say I need to quit again :(

I have a few other goals that I am striving for but the changing it up phrase always applies and is extremely effective eventually. It is all about trial and error. Keep up the great work bud!

Hey Ryan,

Thanks for the comment!

I also quit smoking so we can relate there. I wasn’t smoking nearly as long as you but I know it can be done. We should talk some time about it as I think I can help you out a bit from my personal experience. I’ve now been quit for at least about a year though I quit counting. I struggled off and on as well and finally, this last time, I quit cold turkey.

Catch me on Twitter or something and lets chat.

Thanks! :)

A goal or a target is always needed. Lately I have been thinking about it more and more. It is pointless if you have no goals.

How did you go without a car for so long?! Great post man. Your car example was perfect. I envisioned it the whole post and being able to envision something happening is really powerful.

Hey Alex,

I really appreciate your comment. I’m glad you were able to envision it the whole way through. To answer your question about my car, my girlfriend and I were using her car this whole time.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! :)
