The Reason Nobody Knows That All They Want Is No Money

by BluePop13 on February 24, 2010

This happens to me from time to time as I read great blog posts by people who I visit on a regular basis. I just got the idea from this post from Karen over at ameaningfulexistence.com when she said, “The money isn’t important, it’s what you can do with the money that is important, namely to have freedom.”

That’s exactly what this blog post is all about: the fact that no one actually wants money at all… They really want what they can DO with the money that they get. At least, that’s what I personally “want” money for.

If you don’t agree with me that’s fine but I’m not entirely sure why you wouldn’t. We all want to have more money so we can do do more in our life and be more… Or do we?

The Million, Billion And Beyond

Can I see myself as a millionaire? Not entirely but that’s because I don’t have a vision of it or have it written down on paper and have no plan of action on how I would go about obtaining that much money in my life. I just might become one but at this state I have no idea if I will or not. The question still remains, however, what I would choose to do with the money once I got it.

Buy a nice brand new luxuries home?

Invest it to make even more money?

Save it for a rainy day… Seriously?!

Give half away and be crazy generous?

The amount of things you could do with even a million dollars is more than I could probably even write a book about. In fact, if someone did write a book about a million things you could do with a million dollars they could probably just about make that much money with the book itself. That’s actually a good idea now that I think about it…

The bottom line here and the reason this post doesn’t have to be so long (probably a good thing as long posts aren’t so popularly looked up, but who cares, right?) is that we don’t just all want money but we want to have enough to be able to do something different than what amount of money we currently have is letting us do.

Some of us would rather not do certain things and aren’t too worried about making a ton of money, and that’s fine. But if you’re in the crowd who really wants a lot more money and you have no clue or plan on what you’re going to do with it or at least not taking some form of thought about finding out what exactly you could be doing with it, it’s basically a waste of your time.

Be the person who has a plan. Be the person who wants so much money to do certain things for them. Don’t be the person who just wants more and more money. And don’t be the person who says they never have enough money. Money is simply endless and never ends at the same time. You will always have money and always want more… Just have a reason for wanting more and be smart about it.

What is your reason for wanting more money? This could be even one hundred dollars more to pay off debt you might have or pay off your car for the very last time after paying on it for years now.

Everyone has a reason (hopefully! :) ). What’s yours?

If I really had a million dollars I would save most of it. I’d buy my mother a house, pay for my college and get rid of my sister’s college debt. The rest would go into savings so that my own children could hav their college’s paid for them in full. Funny enough in school lately this has been a big topic to talk about it. In both English and economics.

Dex,

Yes getting out of debt is always an awesome feeling. Being able to go to college and have it completely paid for is super cool too as education is important in life. Buying a house is probably a wise decision also.

Sounds like you’ve got something there.

Thanks for stopping by! :)

And that’s exactly why I say I could care less about money – I’ve held pretty much the same belief for a while now.

However… I’d still like more than I have. This is more so I can afford to support myself, live relatively comfortably, continue learning in my industry, and even just buy the necessary software (over 1000 pound for one part of it as a commercial licence; can’t use it for anything money related until I buy it outright!).

Once I can do that, any further money would be so that I could travel, help people, work where I want to without feeling the need to go ahead and work a minimum wage job again, so on. It’s the facilitator for my happy things.

I enjoyed reading this post Eric – good call.

Hey Heather,

Yes it’s interesting to see that most people just don’t have any idea what they would want to do with the money once they got it. Those who do, care about money but not just about having a ton of it for on reason.

I’m with you though… I’d love to travel and help people.

Thanks! :)

I think if one had that much money, it would be cool once you’ve paid off debts, invested it, etc, you could use the excess to pay for the education of those who can’t afford it. Perhaps set up several scholarships. I think money going towards education is always a good thing.

Hey Gordie,

Money to help pay for better education is always something worth paying for. I couldn’t agree with you more. Better educated leads to better choices and more possibilities.

Thanks! :)

I often have this thought of pushing myself to work extra hard so that I would have more money. But after reading this post, I asked myself a question “What is the real reason for this feeling?” I think for some of us, there isn’t really an exact thing we wish to acquire. I, for one, have this feeling of security whenever I am free from debt and have a good amount of money in the bank. So when funds are small, I worry. But like what you have said, we can always earn money, as long as we can work and we have the drive to do so.

Julius,

I honestly don’t think of being tied into a job as security. That’s just me though. If we have the ability to work and do what it takes to do the best we can at our jobs each day and keep working hard to improve ourselves, money will come our way. That being said, as long as we make sound choices with what money we get we should all be doing ok.

Security comes from within… Not from a job, or from money, but it helps. That’s what I think.

Damn good post! You’re right: to me, it’s not having money for the sake of having it, but rather what I can do with it.

I could “feel” financially secure, take more vacations, help family and friends, etc.

It’s the possibilities of what I can do with it. For some reason, it might be $50k a year, for me it’s $60k-$100k. Of course, I don’t want to be viewed as greedy, as I know there are more important things than just money!

Moon,

Money is very important of course but not the most important thing in life. The importance in my opinion that money carries with it is just exactly that, what can be done with it and how it can help you and hurt you. I add hurt you because if you know how it can hurt you then you know what NOT to do with it.

Nice to hear from you, thanks! :)

More money! Ha, the joy, well like everyone else, so I can keep writing and not worry where the next bag of milk will come from, but mostly I would love a house, I live in a small apartment and always have dreamed of having a house and a nice dodge truck….*sigh*

Winnie,

I used to live in a house and living in a small apartment now is different I have to admit. It’s not horrible but I like houses much more. I haven’t actually even thought what I would do with all kinds of money… I guess that might be one reason I don’t have all kinds of money lol.

Thanks for the comment! :)

Thanks for responding. I agree, and apart from the sound choices we make with how much money we have, it is also important to determine what our real financial priorities are. I think this helps us avoid making bad decisions when spending.

Julius,

Understanding what our priorities are and having a plan to go with is vital. A budget definitely helps but it seems that so many people (myself included) are not taught the importance of what money can do and how to use it wisely. It’s a shame really but we can always learn more!

Thanks for checking back! :)

I think you are spot on with your observation, money is a means to an end and not the end itself. I like having money because it means I worry less, having enough to pay the bills and those unforeseen circumstances that pop up.

You can be rich and still be miserable, in the same sense you can be flat broke and happy. Understanding how money is going to personally help you to do the things that you want is so important, be that to live debt free, invest in your own extended education to secure a better job, to start a business etc…

Karl,

Thanks, yes as I’ve said before and as most people should know, it’s what you do with the money. If you’re not happy then you need to get happy before just having lots of money. Money can’t buy happiness but it certainly buy things that make you happy.

Thanks! :)

I think your post is bang on the money! ;) Pardon the pun! I’ve always found that if I am unsure of what to do and whether or not I am or someone else is doing something for the right reasons and not the money I have asked the following question: If time and money were no object, what would you do?

I find that the answer, once you get beyond a lot of superfluous stuff, is that you get to your true purpose.

Adrian,

It’s good to have a question lined up like that and it’s good also to observe things that way so you have a guide of sorts. Always good information there.

Glad you stopped by! :)

Great post! I have actually wanted to do a post similar to this for some time. I agree with you. I want money to support myself and my family, to take vacations, not by the biggest house I can find. I want to give back to my community. The ones that want more and more money and the ones that lack money only thing about money. I don’t want that.

Alex,

Yes that sounds like a great thing you want there with money. Those want just want money are foolish people in my opinion. That being said, however I do agree with wanting money in order to make more money but the end goal is not to just have money but to live a great life and be able to do and experience great things and give back as much as you can. Money is just that, money. Nothing more, nothing less.

Thanks much for your two cents! :)
